Essence of a Person

by Rachelle Estar Zerebeski

The essence of a person

is not in what you see

what you see is just a face

and the face is just the outside

not the being within

So who is the person

that makes up the essence

and determines what we see

The person is inside

and outside as well

for who they are is shown

by what they do

And what you know of them

is what has meaning to you

So if you look at a picture

and see just a face

you do not know the person

who is behind the mask

But if you see a picture

and you smile

and the picture is the definition of beauty

and you laugh because you remember

something long ago

or something not so far away

and you know a kind of happiness

which is perfection itself

and your whole world has been made

into something better than a dream

and you know this is how

you want your life to be

no matter what you have to give up

to get it

then that is love

and love

is the essence

of the person

inside
