Outside the window pane
Beyond the safety of these walls
The snow swirls and gusts
Tossed on the winds as it falls
Despite the warmth around me
And the glow of artificial lights
I am suddenly reminded
Of the harsh and restless nights
Daytime brings a sunny smile
And a warm feeling inside
But secret pain and worries
Sit, and wait, and hide
When the darkness comes at night
They creep into my mind
They haunt me all through the dark
And, as the sun rises, are left behind
When the daylight breaks at last
The nighttime thoughts have faded away
They seem so surreal now
Like the props and backdrops of a play
I'm behind the window pane
With the curtains drawn
Distracted by the day's affairs
Feeling safe and warm
But seeing the snows blowing around
Helplessly carried by relentless winds
Dredges up the memory of
Those nights that seem to never end
Though I know that sun will shine
And beckon in the spring
I cannot deny the storm out there
Nor the one within
And so I leave the curtains open
And watch the howling storm outside
I watch the roof becoming bare
Watch the snowflakes tumble and collide
I am not able to stop the winds
But daytime walls keep me safe
And when the night weather blows
And stormy winds begin to chafe
I'll just have to bundle up
And try to face the storm
Because I know the storm will break
And I'll once again be safe and warm
