Childhood Friend

by Rachelle Estar Zerebeski

As you sit and stare at me

I wonder what it is you see

With those mysterious devil eyes

That I have always idolized

I know that I will always love you

No matter what evil thing you do

But it is not infrequently

That we find we differ, disagree

For we are not alike, not at all

It's the difference between big and small

I'm always the one to choose the game

And you sit, tolerant and tame

Pretending you don't really mind

Until your tolerance ends and you find

Some opportunity to run away

And find your own game to play

But you were never one to let go

Sweet revenge is yours to show

Of your anger I am unaware

Innocently I smile, forgetting the day's affair

You wait until the moment's ripe

Find a vulnerable spot and take a swipe

Leave me to cry my alligator tears

Remind me of all my pains and fears

But the next day dawns new and bright

Yesterday left behind, everything set right

And as I devise another childish activity

You sit and flick your tail suspiciously

Methodically twitching its black-tipped end

As always, my kitty-cat, my nemesis, my friend
